Portraits, environmental and mini-sessions: Winnipeg Harvest

After talking about my desire to shoot another renegade help-portrait session, my good friend Meghan Pesclovitch and I quickly scheduled a morning session at Winnipeg Harvest, where she works as Co-Manager of Volunteer Services. We mostly shot environmental portraits that Meghan plans to use for a Winnipeg Harvest album and for media release.

I’d love to go back for a more formal session in the future and offer these hard workers and their families some beautiful, personal portraits.

Concert photography: Moses Mayes with the Lytics

David Quiring scored us free entry to the Moses Mayes’ concert on Saturday night in exchange for shooting their concert. Who’d say no to that? It was well worth the late night and exhaustion the following day. (My friends may disagree.)

These are some of my favourite (more atypical) shots of the evening. It was a challenge to shoot, and I can see how I have a lot to learn. Visit anny chen photography on fb to see the rest of the shots!

I find this practice really compelling! It does say so much about the person you’re photographing. It’s hard to maintain meaningful eye contact with a machine and for a few moments, you get glimpses into her soul. That’s the moment I’m always trying to capture. The quiet moment where the person travels into themselves while in front of me.

At the end of any shoot, Treehouse Photography likes to make the person we shot sit and look at the camera, doing whatever they want, for 1 minute.  It’s a long portrait, and I Love them because anyone can fake a smile for 1 millisecond in a photo, but true honesty comes out with it’s a minute long.  This was Nikki.  She rocked.

Portraits, candid and mini-session: Liam

It’s important to trust the vision of the photographer. Point in case, Liam. Eight days together and I only shot him three of those days. But the days I did shoot? His reaction, “Beautiful. You got talent. No doubt.”

I love this work.

Mini-Portrait Session: Jessica

While I was visiting Yellowknife, the Katimavik group requested a photography workshop. I decided on a basic composition workshop to give them a strong foundation, and during the hands-on portion of the workshop, I took the opportunity to take each volunteer’s portrait.
